The Plan for Project Tangi

The Goal:

The goal of Project Tangi is to raise $15,000 in order to build a new library for Erkki Tauya Junior Secondary School in a rural Namibian village.

The Method:

For Project Tangi I've partnered with a fellow former volunteer teacher friend of mine, Scott Karrel, who is the founder of the Unlock Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to unlock educational opportunity in Africa by building schools. Together, Scott and I aim to raise funds as I run the 2014 Boston Marathon and travel to Namibia in June of 2014 to oversee the construction of the new library at Erkki Tauya Junior Secondary School.

Here's the timeline of our work:

  • January-April 2014
    • Raise funds
    • Work with in-country program coordinator to oversee planning at/with Erkki Tauya Junior Secondary School.
    • Assess most accurate needs of Erkki Tauya Junior Secondary School (e.g. how many books do they need? Do they have bookshelves?).
    • Finalize construction plans at Erkki Tauya Junior Secondary School.
    • Choose construction company partner for Erkki Tauya Junior Secondary School.
  • April - May 2014
    • Break ground with construction.
    • Monitor construction progress.
    • Purchase items for library (e.g. books, shelves, computers etc.)
  • June 2014
    • Complete construction.
    • Griffin travels to Namibia to see final product and "open" library.
  • July 2014
    • Unlock Foundation holds seminar to teach students and staff how to best utilize the new library.
